Industrial Wall Shelves & Metal Home Decor

Industrial design does not hide how a thing is held together — it makes the steel, the fixing and the finish part of the look. This collection gathers the EWART WOODS pieces built that way: industrial wall shelves in naturally rusted steel, coated metal shelves in black and white, wood and metal shelving, a rusted floating nightstand, and the kitchen and bathroom pieces that belong with them. Everything is made by hand in our workshop in Latvia. Start with the rustic metal shelves in a set of three or the crisp black and white metal wall shelves, then build the wall from there.

    What our customers say

AI-generated summary of recurring themes across real customer reviews of the products in this collection — not individual quotes.

    • They read as wall art, not just storage. The compliment that repeats most often is that a thin steel ledge looks like a deliberate object on the wall, and several buyers mention the comments they get from visitors.
    • No two rusted pieces are identical. Reviewers who chose the rusted finish write about the colour and pattern being unique to their own shelf; a few would happily have taken even more rust coverage.
    • Hanging is straightforward and the hardware is in the box. Screws and matching wall plugs are supplied, buyers regularly describe the install as easy, and they point out that most shelves work either way up.
    • The packaging survives long journeys. Careful boxing comes up again and again, including on orders shipped well outside Europe.
    • Delivery times vary, and the workshop answers. Some international orders take longer than expected, and reviews about a missing screw, a damaged corner or a custom request consistently end with the problem solved.

Looks like wall art not just shelves!! Lots of compliments so thank you so much. Great craftsmanship!"

How an industrial shelf is actually made

Every piece in this collection is made in our own workshop in Latvia, in the European Union. Sheet steel is cut, folded and welded in house, and from there the entire character of the piece is decided by the finish.

The rusted pieces are not painted to look old. We let the steel oxidise in a controlled process until the colour and texture are right, and then seal the surface so the rusting stops there. That sealant is the reason the finish does not rub off onto your books, towels or hands, and it is why the rusted designs are rated for a balcony or covered patio as well as for indoors. Because oxidation is a natural process, the tone and the pattern differ on every single shelf — the full story of the finish is in our journal.

The coated pieces are finished in matte black, white, anthracite grey, beige or green, with an optional golden screw detail on the black and white wall shelves. Where wood meets metal we use real wood veneer (koka finieris) in ash, oak, cherry, wenge or walnut — the top of the rusted floating nightstand is the clearest example — and charred, brushed wood on selected bathroom pieces such as the toilet paper holder with shelf.

Sizes are kept consistent across the metal range, so pieces bought months apart still line up on the wall: small 33 cm, medium 52 cm and large 81 cm, with depths between 13 and 17 cm. Screws and wall plugs come with every shelf, and most designs can be hung either way up — that is how several customers turned a shelf into a picture ledge.

Because the work is done by hand, we say the awkward part plainly: dimensions can vary by a few millimetres, and welds and rust patterns differ from piece to piece. Every order also plants a tree — one order, one tree — through our reforestation commitment.

Industrial design, and the rooms it belongs in

Industrial style came out of factories and lofts, and the pieces that still work keep something of that origin: exposed metal, a thin honest plate instead of a thick decorative one, screws treated as a detail rather than as something to hide, and a finish that shows its age instead of pretending not to. The 2026 reading of the style is warmer than the old bare-brick-and-black-pipe version. Modern industrial, urban loft, wabi-sabi, rustic farmhouse and warm minimalism all accept a rusted steel ledge or a matte black shelf without argument, especially when there is wood or a plant nearby to soften the line.

In a kitchen, the rusted utensil holder and the metal and wood knife holder put everyday tools on show instead of in a drawer. In a bathroom, a metal toilet paper holder and a small ledge do the work of a plastic set with a fraction of the visual noise. A bedroom gets the rusted floating nightstand, which frees the floor and makes a small room read larger; living rooms and hallways take a staggered run of shelves; and because the steel is sealed, a balcony or covered patio is fair game too. If you want the same wall in a softer register, the Scandinavian collection and the wider metal wall shelves and shelves collections share the same sizes and finishes.

Who buys it: people finishing a loft or a renovated flat who want the steel to be visible rather than hidden, renters who need storage with a small footprint and no built-in carpentry, cooks who would rather keep their tools on the wall, and anyone who has been looking for a shelf that is a piece of design rather than a plank.

    Available finishes

EWART WOODS wood veneer finishes: oak, ash, cherry, walnut and wenge
    • Oak — pale and even-grained; the calm counterweight to rusted steel.
    • Ash — the lightest of the five, open-grained, keeps a small room airy.
    • Cherry — warm reddish-brown that deepens gently with age.
    • Walnut — deep chocolate brown; the classic top for the rusted nightstand.
    • Wenge — near-black and graphic, for dark industrial interiors.

Wood veneer tops are offered on the designs that combine wood and metal. The all-metal pieces come in naturally rusted steel or a coated finish in black, white, anthracite grey, beige or green, and selected bathroom pieces use charred wood.

    Frequently asked questions

What makes these shelves industrial rather than just minimalist?

Minimalism hides the structure; industrial design shows it. In practice that means visible steel instead of a painted surface, a thin folded plate instead of a thick slab, screws left as a deliberate detail, and a finish that carries texture rather than a flat coat. Every piece in this collection is designed around those decisions, which is why a rusted ledge sits comfortably in a loft and a matte black one in a modern kitchen.

Does the rusted finish rub off on walls, books or hands?

No. We develop the rust in a controlled oxidation process and then apply a protective sealant that stops the rusting and locks the surface. The sealed finish is what keeps the rust from transferring onto your belongings, and it also means the piece needs very little maintenance. What does stay is the look: warm orange-brown texture with the depth of real oxidised steel rather than paint imitating it.

Can I use these shelves outdoors?

Yes, the sealed rusted steel and the coated steel shelves are made for both indoor and outdoor use, which is why customers hang them on balconies, in porches and in outdoor kitchens. Give them a sheltered spot if you can, and dry them after heavy rain the way you would any metal furniture. Pieces that combine metal with wood veneer, such as the floating nightstand, are intended for indoor use only.

How are they mounted, and how much weight will they hold?

Each shelf arrives with matching screws and wall plugs and mounts directly to the wall; most designs can be hung either way up, so the same shelf can serve as a ledge or as a picture rail. We do not publish a single weight rating, because the limiting factor is nearly always the wall rather than the steel. On concrete or brick the supplied plugs are enough; on plasterboard, fix into the studs or use anchors rated for the load you plan to put on the shelf.

Should I choose rusted, black or white?

Rusted is the warm, textural choice and the one people pick when they want the shelf to be a visible object with character; no two pieces are the same. Matte black is the graphic option, drawing a clean dark line across a pale wall and disappearing against a dark one. White keeps the industrial silhouette without darkening a small room, which is why it is the most common pick for bathrooms and compact kitchens. All three come in matching sizes, so mixing them across one wall works.

Will my shelf look exactly like the product photo?

Very close, but not identical, and that is deliberate. The rust pattern comes from a natural oxidation process, so colour and texture vary from piece to piece, and handmade dimensions can differ by a few millimetres. Screens also render rust tones differently from one device to the next. If an exact tone matters for your project, message us before ordering and we will describe the current batch honestly.

Where are they made, and what do you do about sustainability?

Every piece is made by hand in our own workshop in Latvia, in the European Union, with no third-party factory in the chain. For every order placed we plant a tree, supporting reforestation so that we give back more than we take. Pieces are made to order rather than mass-produced into a warehouse, which keeps waste and overproduction down, and they are packed carefully enough that reviewers regularly comment on the boxing after long international shipping.
