Wall Coat Rack - Cavallo

A wall coat rack usually costs you 25 or 30 cm of a corridor you did not have to spare. The Cavallo is 15 cm deep, which is the whole idea: a slim wood coat rack with a shelf, five open cubbies and a steel rail, in a case narrow enough to live in a hallway that is really just a route to another room. Fifteen centimetres is also enough shelf to actually put something on, which 8 or 10 cm is not.

How it is built

The case is Baltic birch plywood faced with a real wood veneer. Because the veneer is laid rather than jointed from solid stock, the grain runs unbroken along the full 81 cm instead of changing every few centimetres. Below it, a powder coated steel frame carries the garment rail and takes the load off the shelf line. It hangs on a French cleat, so the wall keeps the screws and the face of the rack stays clean - no visible brackets, no plugs to fill.

What goes where

The top of the coat rack shelf is a ledge, deep enough for a small plant, a diffuser or a set of post. The five cubbies underneath are for the things that otherwise migrate: keys, sunglasses, gloves, a dog lead, the letters you keep meaning to open. The rail below takes standard clothes hangers, so a coat keeps its shoulders instead of stretching over a peg. Hangers are not included - the ones in our photographs are our own wooden hangers and are sold separately.

Where it works

In an entryway it replaces the console-and-bowl arrangement without taking floor space. In a narrow hallway it is one of the few wooden coat racks that will not catch a shoulder on the way past. Over a chest of drawers it becomes a key rack and jewellery ledge; in a home office the cubbies swallow cables and cards. Against a white wall walnut is the warmest of the five finishes, wenge suits a darker room, and ash and oak keep things pale and Scandinavian.
